The show also went from 8am to 6pm, so I think the time it takes for intro and training to mull around through a standard arena would have put them into the 9pm range on the tail end of the show. However, I think they might have willy nilly put the "arena" up because it was definitely wider than it should have been, and the corner letters were too close to the corner. I assume they don't have an actual dressage arena because it is a hunter barn that hosted the show. I'm good with poles and random things marking my arena, but I do ask that it's measured properly!

And thank you for the comments about Penn! You're right, we're there for the miles. We'll be there again in a few weeks for the miles. But one can hope that the judge uses half marks next time!Codex Dressagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04736021620789376995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010353728052033100.post-45944246951755608802015-11-03T15:53:27.352-05:002015-11-03T15:53:27.352-05:00I think the test looks lovely, steady, and fairly ...I think the test looks lovely, steady, and fairly relaxed, and Penn is a GORGEOUS mover. It seems to me like the judge wasn't spectacular but sometimes that happens. Whatever, it's a schooling show, you're there for the miles for Penn. He was a good boy and tried hard, so the scores can go hang.

Also, WHAT was up with that arena? The size, the awkward poles on the side... I'm pretty sure we would have stepped all over them and zoomed about, so kudos to you for keeping Penn focused!jenjhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01737679332792618499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010353728052033100.post-80287073911847617022015-11-03T15:23:32.207-05:002015-11-03T15:23:32.207-05:00Haha! And yes, still an excellent experience for him!Codex Dressagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04736021620789376995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010353728052033100.post-36670386639765378802015-11-03T15:21:46.554-05:002015-11-03T15:21:46.554-05:00Thank you!! If something goes wrong, don't hurry up and fix it because well, it's already wrong so now you have to salvage and make sure it doesn't mess up the next movement. When we broke in test 1, I really should have put some effort into fixing it the first time instead of throwing him back into canter. With the bell to enter- if you're trotting around the outside of the arena, most horses can trot the entire way around the arena without running out of time. If you're already down at the bottom ready to enter, take an extra circle and plan your entrance. You wouldn't hurry up without planning if it was a bell to get to your first fence, so don't hurry to enter!

I think the half scores would have made a huge difference in 'relative to the pack'. Since she wasn't giving them, someone's barely 6 was my not quite a 7, and we would score the same. I think I would have been much higher up in placings if there were half scores. E read the scores and asked if the judge was blind- she watched me warm up and the other horses and was like, he was the best one in warm up, hands down.Codex Dressagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04736021620789376995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010353728052033100.post-7261514678816488472015-11-03T14:18:53.604-05:002015-11-03T14:18:53.604-05:00Love the video! I too think the scores were pretty harsh and I don't understand why there were no half marks. Oh well. Still great experience for Penn!Hawkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05303236534507171227noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010353728052033100.post-401057565498934522015-11-03T13:52:48.821-05:002015-11-03T13:52:48.821-05:00Low across the board helps for sure! I know they're tough there, but they've never been overly harsh on me when I didn't deserve it... they also have nailed me to the wall when I have, so.... but I still look forward to riding with them!Codex Dressagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04736021620789376995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010353728052033100.post-4902918211505599822015-11-03T13:51:04.021-05:002015-11-03T13:51:04.021-05:00I'm so glad you agree she was harsh!! I've...I'm so glad you agree she was harsh!! I've been feeling very 'why the heck are these L judges so darn harsh all the time' and I was starting to wonder if it was me... considering I am the common denominator here. I'd rather have them be a little generous (no overboard or else we're looking at the other side of the spectrum!) because I auto subtract 3-5% of my score to compare with the difficulty of a rated show. When I looked through the tests, aside from the couple 4's and 5's, they look pretty good. Then you get to the total and it's a complete, wtf. I've had a couple tests that were flip flopped like you said, and I'm able to write those off a lot easier (I still try to address the issues that were pointed out though- if someone said they need to be better, I'm sure they could use some help!).

And thank you!!! Penn is such a mellow guy and he tries very hard- I've been careful to make sure I keep everything super positive for him because I would love that attitude to continue- I suspect a super good attitude like that will make all the difference later on. He's not that difficult to keep on task- most of his baby things at this show were him just wanting to gawk and look, or flinch at the clicking from the photographer, haha. I've ridden in a couple arenas that are 'off' and it's really not easy. I'm sure you'd be able to though, you have a ton more experience showing and riding than I do.Codex Dressagehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04736021620789376995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010353728052033100.post-14446243261053702352015-11-03T12:51:09.128-05:002015-11-03T12:51:09.128-05:00every test i tell myself that i wont rush when the...every test i tell myself that i wont rush when they ring the bell. and then they ring the bell and i go 'omgfreakoutgetintotheringNOWWWWWWW' haha. ah well.

for all my talk in the past week about not caring too much about shitty judging, that opinion was based more or less on the idea that you can still see how you did relative to the pack. but if everyone scores exactly the same... wellllll... then that doesn't really work either. frustrating.

anyway, nice tests and yay for Penn for being able to give a good representation of the work you've put into him! emmahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05686949099663199382noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4010353728052033100.post-63513556627086735082015-11-03T11:53:32.632-05:002015-11-03T11:53:32.632-05:00Wow she was kind of harsh in those collectives! Even with some bobbles, the quality of horse is still clear and that 6 on gaits should have been at least a 7 IMO, I'm totally with you on that one, wtf. And yah, why no half points? There were so many movements where yah he was maybe a bit inconsistent, but could easily have scored a 6.5 instead of a 6. I would have guessed that the scores were a bit higher after watching the videos. But hearing how everyone else got scored, yikes.

Yah I've had some negative experiences with L grads. Some of them are really good, but there's something about the r, R, and S programs that really solidify a judge's ability to judge (as any continuing education in any discipline will). Sometimes I got scores where I think that the SCORE is what I expected, but then you read the comments and look at the path the judge took to get to the score and it makes no sense.

But despite the judging, you guys look awesome and after wrestling my young horse through several of these things, I'm super impressed with how good he was! I'm sure you were masking a lot of the little baby things, but he looks like he's really with you and trying. I'm also impressed that you managed to ride such a nice test in an oddly shaped arena, I feel like I'd never be able to do that.
